David Smith

 

David Smith holds the Alec Nove Chair in Russian and East European Studies at the University of Glasgow, where he also co-edits the journal Europe-Asia Studies. His research focuses on issues of nationalism, ethnic politics, state consolidation and the governance of ethno-cultural diversity in Central and Eastern Europe, and he has published extensively on all of these topics over the past 20 years. In 2014-18 he led a large, UK ESRC-funded comparative research project on debates and practices of minority national-cultural autonomy in Estonia, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Serbia and their implications for state consolidation and social cohesion. He also convenes the Observatory on Kin-State Policies (KINPOL) at the University of Glasgow.
